Prevention

Implementing an effective drug prevention program in schools requires a comprehensive, multi-faceted approach that combines education, early intervention, community involvement, and strong school policies.

Random Drug Detection

Implementing random drug testing (RDT) in schools can be an effective tool for promoting a drug-free environment, protecting students' health, and preventing substance abuse.

Drug Substances in Schools

Recent studies have identified the most commonly used substances among adolescents in schools, along with their usage percentages:

Alcohol: Despite a decline in recent years, alcohol remains prevalent. In 2022, 15.2% of 8th graders, 31.3% of 10th graders, and 51.9% of 12th graders reported alcohol use in the past year.

Nicotine Vaping: The use of e-cigarettes is notable among teens. In 2022, 12% of 8th graders, 20.5% of 10th graders, and 27.3% of 12th graders reported vaping nicotine in the past year.

Cannabis (Marijuana): Marijuana use is significant, with 8.3% of 8th graders, 19.5% of 10th graders, and 30.7% of 12th graders reporting use in the past year.

Prescription Drugs: Misuse of prescription medications, including opioids and stimulants, is a concern. In 2022, 1.7% of 12th graders reported using narcotics other than heroin (e.g., Vicodin, OxyContin) in the past year.

Other Illicit Drugs: Use of substances like cocaine, heroin, and amphetamines remains relatively low. In 2022, 4.9% of 8th graders, 5.7% of 10th graders, and 8.0% of 12th graders reported using illicit drugs other than marijuana in the past year.
